Past
A decent childhood was something she could always look back on. Her parents were good to her, her elder brother was good to her. No one ever laid a hand on her out of anger. Her family had wealth and power in New York City since her father was the CEO of one of the largest automotive oil companies across the globe. She never wanted for anything, she never needed to do anything. Her parents had nannies and caretakers who would attend to her every need as a child. She'd never had to learn how to do anything of real import. It was a good life. A happy life. One where she was the fairy tale princess who got everything she ever asked for and never had to work for anything. But even a princess has some strife.
She was taught to speak Spanish by her nanny, Sandra, and Japanese by her father's orders of a tutor. He was afraid that his heritage would be lost within America. Kia didn't mind, after all, what other children her age knew Japanese and Spanish as fluently as English? Both spoken and written? Not many. When she was eleven was when her life changed. Sandra was taking Kia and Luka to school in the early hours of the morning when the earth shook. Buildings collapsed from the quakes that rocked the ground. She was terrified but Sandra promised to get them away from danger and to find their parents. Luka, in the backseat beside Kia, held his sister tightly as if to protect her. He was only a few years older than she, but managed to make her feel safe.
They drove out of New York, headed for Jersey in the hopes that they would find that only New York had fallen to the disaster. Of course they found the same all along the road. Houses crumpled, a strange smelling smoke that leaked up from the craters in the ground. Sandra drove for what seemed like hours before the car began to chug on empty and she pulled into a gas station. They traveled for six months with no sign of their parents, no word from them, no idea how to reach them or if they were even alive. Sandra did all she could to make sure the children were safe and protected.
But all she could wasn't enough. As Kia was nearing her 12th birthday they were ambused by bandits along the side of the road. Kia ran, hoping to be spared. Sandra was taken first while she tried to defend Luka. Kia was taken second while she tried to hide. Luka was grabbed last. The bandits sold them at a small auction. Luka disappeared with a pack of werewolves. Sandra was sold to a group of men that made Kia's skin crawl, even at such a young age. Kia was sold to an elderly man that needed assistance.
She cared for him in his large manor home as the power grids around them failed and the water lines stopped running. She went shopping for him as everything went stale or moldy. Kia did as she was supposed to and seven months later the man died. Kia had learned that he really wasn't that old but only in his late 30's. It wasn't until she was older that she realized that he shouldn't have died that young. When the old man had died she collected the few belongings she had and left again. Kia ran as far as she could, searching for someplace safe. Along the way she hoped and prayed to find her brother and nanny or maybe even her parents.
Kia was lonely through the years and had to do things a princess never should. She had to hunt for her own food, scavange through empty buildings and teach herself how to shoot a gun. Eventually the little one found her way into Orealis.
